Enjoying Time with Daddy

We've been enjoying God's little blessings in life these past couple of weeks. God was kind enough to give our little area a lovely "February thaw" of 40s temperatures for a week... enough to melt our backyard!

A surprise care package from Natalie :)
Liam especially enjoyed the puzzle and fish from cousin Portia.

Making sure the driveway is cleared of snow...

... and when it is, put some snow back on it to shovel off later!

Two days later, He decided to humor me and sent 12 more inches of snow the next two days (and since about an inch or two almost everyday- we are near the record of snowfall for February). Although Joel has been on ER this month, the past couple of weeks (not including tonight where he is still not home and told me he's only had breakfast), he's been coming home at decent times- that combined with no anatomy means lots of time spent with us :)

So what do we do when the Daddy is home??

We play basketball with Daddy and then come home to a feast afterwards.

We read Bible stories to Daddy (until Mom tries to take a picture, to which we get annoyed and tell her "no") while he works on renovating our dining room... pictures of that to come

We go to Leo for baptisms (of Tashi, a Jamaican girl), get to see our Uncle B and hang out with our wonderful friends John and Amy, where we share yummy applesauce

We help Daddy shovel snow after a large snowfall

We go to Jungle Java (with Mommy's cousin Jenny and her kids, as well as Tiffany and her kids), where Daddy surprises us and takes us on the BIG kids playground (which Mommy and her pregnant belly refuse to navigate)

Zion and Moriah playing in the toddler area

And last but definitely NOT least...
we watch "Banana" countless times with Daddy.
And laugh each time.

"PEET-UH"

So my son decided he wasn't going to take a nap today. I put him in his crib at about 1pm, and by 530pm, he was still talking away up there. Yelling sometimes. Whining and moaning at other times. I was waiting for him to jump/fall out of his crib (yes, it's a new "trick" of his) since I haven't gotten the crib tent yet, but he seemed content in there today. Finally, I gave up and went in there and thought I would try the whole "rocking" thing- something we haven't done (to put him to sleep anyways) in a long time. It worked. But my pregnant legs started cramping and good ole' Aiden started kicking, and well, lets just say Liam wasn't totally out yet. So we ended up reading books together (I figured it'd be easier to ease him awake then desert him at this point and have a hysterical child for the rest of the evening).

A few books in, with him half dead in my arms, and we started reading this book (which, mind you, I've read before)...

And then we got to this page...

And he pointed to the pizza and said "ball". I told him it wasn't a ball, and that the animals were eating "pizza". He repeated it "peet-uh". And we went on. A few pages later, he sat up, flipped the pages back, and pointed to the pizzas... "peet-uh".

"Yes, honey, that is pizza."

"Peet-uh. Eat. Eat. Peet-uh."

"Yup, the animals are eating the pizza, aren't they?"

"Peet-uh. Peet-uh. Peet-uh. Eat. EAT. PEET-UH."

At this point, he leaps down out of the chair next to me, runs, opens up the door, looks at me, says "down-tairs. Eat. Eat. Peet-uh." and starts climbing down the staircase. I follow, tell him Mommy can give him something to eat, but I was going to make tortilla soup for dinner, because it was too late for Mommy to make dough for pizza. Well, he must have thought pizza would magically appear in our frig... it didn't. Then he checked the pantry... no pizza there either. Then I popped him on the counter so he could watch me make the tortilla soup. I would reinforce it... "Look Liam, Mommy is making soup for Daddy". He'd shake his head and tell me "peet-uh." Well, wouldn't you know it, he was sitting next to some ads that came in today... and guess what type of fast food coupons were among the pile? And guess who text messaged me at the same time to tell me that he wasn't gonna get out of the OR til at least 830pm??

So guess what this Mommy did???

I just hoped he would like pizza (it's about a 50:50 shot with him, and because of Joel's dairy intolerance, we rarely eat pizza, let alone takeout)...

So after serenading me in the car all the way to the pizza joint with his sing-song "peet-uh. peet-uh. peet-uh", he thrilled the teenage workers with his exuberant "PEET-UH" at the various pictures of pizza on the menu. And he was totally delighted when they brought us ours. So after the quick drive home, he got to have his pizza.

Praise the Lord, he liked it. Otherwise I don't know what I would have done.

I think it's safe to say he's learned a new word though. :)

Jehovah-Rapha and my Mom's Visit

So my mom just left after spending a couple weeks out here.

Her timing was perfect. Her original flight was only supposed to be for a week, but my dad decided on a "whim" a couple weeks before she flew out to extend it an extra week. All I can say is God's timing is perfect sometimes. I had already been suffering from congestion for over a couple weeks before her arrival, but little did I know that the night I picked her up would begin the worst week of it all, with not only congestion that left me only being able to partially breathe through my nose a few moments (and I mean moments!) each day, but also with nausea too! Add to that my fitful nights of sleeping sitting up (3-5 hrs max, with me waking up every 30min from not being able to breathe)... and well, you get the picture.

So, since I couldn't even climb my own stairs without having to pause a couple times to catch my breathe, she took over with everything to help this poor Virkler household run smoothly! She not only took care of me, but my son, cooked the meals and cleaned up the house- I'm sure Joel was living in luxury he hadn't experienced since I got ill! AND she put up with our terrible weather too! What a trooper :)

I feel bad that she had to do all that for most all of her visit, but I'm very grateful for God's timing with it all, because I don't know how I would have survived otherwise- I know Liam would have definitely gone nuts! She and my poor husband also put up with my constant complaining about my congestion- the only thing I felt like I could do when I couldn't take any medications, and all the herbs and vitamins you can name, countless glasses of water/juice, nasal sprays and neti pots, Vicks and breatherite strips, steams and humidifiers couldn't help me from going through about a half of a kleenex box a day and clear up my sinuses for more then a couple minutes at a time... if that.

I'd plead to God all throughout the day, even in my son's prayers (I'm selfish like that), and especially in the sleepless hours of the night. It is amazing what God can do through trials. He brought me from being a selfish, bitter, frustrated and tired complainer to someone sick and at peace with their circumstances, even if it would last the rest of my pregnancy. And once He got me to that point, He told me that one of His name's is Jehovah-Rapha, and did I believe it? If I truly believed that He was the Lord that heals, then I needed to trust in Him completely... that way Satan couldn't come back later to say "well, maybe it was some of God's grace, but it was also this and this and this..." That meant stopping everything I was doing to try to heal myself and trusting in the Great Physician to take care of my poor pregnant body with his perfect treatment. And I did (unfortunately, I must admit, I had a partial attitude of "what have I got to lose?")... And He healed me. COMPLETELY. Sure, I still blow my nose a time or two, but in a matter of a couple days, my sinuses cleared up. No more aching headaches. No more tender jaws/teeth from the sinus pressure. No more feeling like I was drowning when all I was doing was drinking a glass of water, or suffocating when I was eating a salad. And no more stuffed-to-the-point-that-no-one-can-understand-you-on-the-phone sinus congestion! YAY!! And all I could do was step back and offer a measly "thank you Jesus", along with a few other unworthy praises, while taking delight in having my whole system operating at full capacity in the way it should work.

I think that left me with a couple of real days to enjoy my mom's visit... :)

We really didn't do too much while she was out. How can you when the driver is sick and there is tons of snow on the ground, and the temperatures are below average COLD! So we did what anyone else stuck inside would do (that is when we weren't watching my son shovel snow outside... his FAVORITE activity... and yes, I'm not joking when I say favorite)... we cooked, and baked, and talked, and read books, and played with Liam. :) Not an all together bad way to spend a couple of weeks, but I can't wait for warmer outdoor days again!

WARNING:

Another onslaught of pictures will take place below, for those back in Phoenix that were unable to fly out with my mom

 Katie crocheted me a scarf.
Liam decided from the beginning he liked it and always wanted to wear it.

Yogurt... he usually ends up wearing the majority of it.
As messy as he was though, he got a little bit on his finger, and wanted me to wipe it off!

Cheese!
Apparently I take a lot of pictures, so my son knows just where the lens is.

Multitasking

Nana doesn't let him hold her touchscreen phone- a wise decision.
Here he is talking to his Auntie Katie.

A new favorite perch to read books

Chocolate cream(less) pie... Very tasty, but I won't tell you what's in it in case I ever serve it to you ;)
My first attempt to bake homemade bread by myself... in order to give it to the neighbor who plowed our drive and walkways after our "blizzard"... and then towed me out of my driveway when I got stuck after a second large(r?) snowfall.

You can tell I'm from Phoenix (and have no sense of depth perception) when you look at what I tried to drive over before my neighbor came to rescue with his truck and snow shovel :) Apparently the city snowplows aren't as nice as the neighborhood ones in making sure they don't block the driveways when plowing

Eating ice cream when it is 15 degrees outside- notice the empty DQ...

Strawberry sundaes... he didn't eat the strawberries... apparently he is content with just plain vanilla :)

Trying to play with the "bu ball" (blue ball) in a snowy drive

Looking at Christmas pictures... one of his favorite pasttimes (don't mind the boxes that haven't been stored yet...)

"koo-koo" trains that he got for Christmas

looking at pictures (yes, he's vain) on Nana's phone

Our favorite Tuesday morning activity- waiting for the garbage truck to come down our street

A new (and shortlived) hairdo... caused by oatmeal and cinnamon roll icing

Showing off his different boots (He put his other snow boot on Nana's foot)

Practicing his "upstairs/downstairs" with the animals on Noah's ark

Liam helping his Mama shovel the drive

 Shoveling our walkway

He doesn't always understand the concept that the snow is supposed to be taken off the walkway

And with that I'm caught up (or the most I am willing to be at the moment) with my unfortunate sabbatical away from my blog! Hopefully, I'm never this bad again (but no promises!)

The Aftermath

This post was originally typed up the day after our "blizzard"... but since I'm anal retentive when it comes to these things, I can't have it posting before my Thanksgiving and Christmas pictures...

We officially survived our first blizzard :)

Actually, I'm not sure if it even ended up being a blizzard, because it didn't really hit til nightfall. We were supposed to get up to 18" of snow in a 24 hour period... we probably only got about 9". Not enough to make it to the top 5 greatest snowfalls for our area (I think we needed 13"), but definitely enough for this Phoenix girl!

It was kind of strange seeing it piled up so high outside our sliding doors. When Joel got home, him and Liam went out to play in it together (Joel was disappointed, because it was perfect snowboarding conditions- which he wasn't able to take advantage of... but terrible snowman-making conditions!) Mom and I just confined ourselves indoors all day long!

I had every intention of going out there while Liam was napping and slowly shoveling away the snow (with my congestion, I've been too weak to start the snowblower... sigh), but our wonderful neighbor did our drive, walkway and sidewalks for us! :)

And Joel even had a light day of work, because people were told to stay off the roads... so all's well that end's well!

Sorry the pictures are so lousy. And its mostly their backs... I wasn't willing to tramp out into the snow at night to take decent quality ones!

Getting ready to play outdoors
Joel made me a heart :)
I told him to climb the tree so I could have an aerial shot, but apparently that's where his love ends...;)

The snow looks shallow in this area, because Liam refused to walk further then a couple of feet from the back door

Trying to make a snowball just like Daddy!

 Joel's snow angel

 Liam's snow angel

 Less then amused

He got sick of the snow and thought he would start shoveling some of it away instead. A losing battle.

A White-less Christmas...

... just how this Phoenix girl likes them :)

WARNING!!
This is an onslaught of pictures... just like I promised for those that actually care to see them

Motchitsuki 2010
Joel and I flew (separately) to LA from Detroit to visit my Grandfather and relatives and take part in the annual Motchitsuki festivities... the best part about being Japanese :)

This was Liam's first time meeting my relatives on my mom's side. It was a quick trip (we flew out Saturday afternoon, drove to Phoenix Sunday evening) but a memorable one!

Amazingly delish fresh, homemade mochi :)

Eating from the yummy Japanese potluck dishes vs actually working

Papa showing Liam how to make mochi

Liam's first experience with the super fine mochiko flour

Bro-in-laws

Auntie Susie and Kasey :)

Cousins rolling mochi.
It took major coercing to get Joel in there, but once he started he worked hard the rest of the afternoon!

Rare and random weather for LA... lots and lots of rain. Liam loved it.

Dancers at my Grandfathers nursing home

Giving Ojiichan "bumps".
My grandpa loved it that Liam called him "grandpa" in Japanese. He taught Liam how to cast a fishing pole ;)

Girl cousins (minus my youngest ones, Katie and Kirsten)

Guy cousins (minus Geoff and my youngest ones)

Almost all of us...

Pre-Christmas Days in Phoenix...
Consisted of some rain... homemade cake that Liam loved... spending an evening with Uncle Bob (and harassing a late Katie at MBFGR)... a "day date" for Liam with Auntie Katie (to see Kierland's Santa and other shops in the area)... and the Greenbank Family Christmas at my Uncle Elmers

Late night snacks are such a treat!

Tickling Uncle Bob

Katie's "birthday baklava"...
Uncle Bob had her plate set at a diff table since she was late, and then had the waiters sing "happy birthday" to her to get a "good tip"

The Christmas tree in Kierland's

In awe with the reindeer...

Should I touch it or not...

Waiting for Santa...

Still waiting on Santa...

He smiled and laughed at everyone sitting with Santa...
until it was his turn. Then it was a death grip on Auntie Katie!

Walking through the streets of Kierland

Enjoying a "healthy" smoothie from Starbucks
Katie bought him a 15cent pet goldfish
He loved it and hugged it until he got home

Reading books with Papa
Uncle John brought a jeep over for Liam to play with...

...Auntie Katie had to show him how to use it.

Christmas Eve at Uncle Elmers...
He was so excited for his police car from his cousin Derek

Christmas DayAfter waking up in the morning to go to church, we waited until Uncle Joel could take a break from work to open Christmas presents and stockings... what to do while you wait?! Make and decorate Christmas cookies of course!

Piggyback rides with Daddy :)

Opening presents Christmas day

Mr. Potato Head from Auntie Katie and his first soccer ball from Uncle Joel

Animal finger puppets in the stocking

Playing with the barn that my parents gave him...
while wearing his new John Deere cowboy boots, that he absolutely adores

My husband was excited to get a Starbucks giftcard in his stocking until he saw the picture on the front :)
In my mom's defense, she did look for a Purdue one- alas AZ Starbucks didn't have any...

Finding a new "horse" for his rides...

"Old Jones Horse"

I told Katie I'd mix the dough if she did the cutouts...

Liam wanted to help mix the frosting

Putting sprinkles on the cookies...

The more sprinkles, the "better" the cookie...

Trying to frost the cookie on his own

Let me make sure this frosting tastes ok before I put it on...

I think I like the frosting better then the cookie!

Nana trying to help the productivity

Papa even coming over to give it a try

A plate of some of the finished products...
can you tell which ones Liam made?
Clue: look for the ones with missing parts ;)
