Actually, this was the first "celebration" that included people outside of our immediate family. It began with Dana K leading everyone in singing to him at church lunch yesterday (which he loved) Then, for dinner I was going to make his favorite pizza rolls, but he asked us that morning if we could do sushi instead. Since Joel knew I didn't have the fish on hand, we invited a couple of ortho residents, who Joel knew would talk ortho with him, so he could still be "studying" for boards while enjoying his son's birthday (he also knew they would want to get home to study too, so it wouldn't be a late night...). And Liam didn't mind one bit, because he loves Danya and Khoa (unfortunately, Emily had to work and couldn't make it).
Now when you see the pictures... before you think I'm crazy, you've got to understand.
Last year, Liam begged me for a monster cake. One eye, five feet, blue, etc etc.
Well....
... it didn't happen. With Callum arriving two weeks late, I was to exhausted from sleep deprivation to create a cake a week later, let alone figure out how to come up with something that would meet his expectations.
Well...
... let's just say that he never gave up on that dream. He's talked about it on and off since he was 3 1/2.
And finally, a couple of months ago, he told me that if I'd be too scared to make him a monster cake (and have a big monster in the house), he would settle for monster cupcakes.
Oh gracious. Like that makes my life any easier. The problem just becomes a few inches smaller.
But thankfully he was thrilled with what I created. And he got to help me decorate.
And then, in typical fashion for my boys, they ate most the candy and the fruit on the table (the adults got angel food cake and fresh berries), and left the cupcakes.
There was so much sugar there, I didn't mind, and was quick to clean up when they got distracted by the legos so that they couldn't return to it. ;)
And in keeping with my desire to have a "tradition"... these are a "few" of his favorite things at age 5...
(This year, after I interviewed him, he sat down at his desk and started asking me questions, such as my favorite food, animal, color... and shoe?!) :)
Height:
42.5 inches

38.6 lbs
Favorite(s....) Foods:
"Chicken from Costco. and PB & J's. But if I could eat whatever I wanted, it'd be sushi and gyoza."
Favorite Treat:
Ice cream. With little brownies and chocolate stuff on top
(think froyo toppings)
Favorite Book:
Berenstain Bears
Favorite Old Testament Story:
Jonah and the Whale
Favorite New Testament Story:
Jesus dying on the cross
Favorite attribute(s) about Jesus:
"He's my Savior"
"He's my Light when the world is dark"
Favorite(s...) Songs:
Jesus Loves Me
At the Cross
Only a boy named David
Give me Jesus
Favorite Place(s...) to Go:
Jungle Java. Trader Joe's. Costco.
The park with Sarah H, Elijah and Jonah
Favorite Thing to Do:
Work outside, digging in the garden, riding his bike and picking dandelions for Mommy.
Things he does NOT like:
Crickets- because his Papa doesn't like them.
Scary stuff.
Ants. They bite.
3 Things Liam likes to do with Daddy:
1. Go to airshows
2. Daddy dates like at Orange Leaf (froyo shop a mile away)
3. Help Daddy mow the lawn
3 Things Liam likes to do with Mommy:
1. Help make food
2. Play and build legos together
3. Play the piano and sing for Mommy
Things he likes to do with his brothers... :
Play trains, look at books, build stuff.
Eat stuff. Help wash hands. Tackle. :)
When he grows up, Liam wants to be a...
Servant.
{melt my heart!}
He also wants to be a doctor, construction worker, builder, teacher, minister, missionary, and "army soldier for Jesus that drives helicopters"... that way he is always "helping people"
His response to my last question is a good summation for the personality of Liam. He continues to love to learn (he is currently learning how to read), and is definitely into that inquisitive stage, but with a scarily high memory retention- sometimes it's not so good of a thing for this Mommy! He is sensitive to other's feelings, quick to forgive, always looking out for others, especially his Mommy. He is my "knight", and can often be found playfully arguing with Joel about who's "Baby" I am. He loves to snuggle (even snuggling with us this morning), usually is quick to share, already has a heart for God at such a young age, is sarcastic, slightly impatient, is filled with energy (what boy isn't, right?!), loves music and will listen to books being read for hours.
Now for pictures... :)

Waiting in the freezer for the attack.
Our "Sugar Monsters" as Liam quite accurately described them.
One of my favorite blogs gave me some of the inspiration for them, but my boys wanted multi-colored ones, and I didn't have cute cupcake liners on hand. And I think the arms make them look better. Joel thought Liam's one-eyed one was holding a worm. At least Liam recognized right away that it was a 5...
Outside playing and enjoying a sunny (yet chilly day)
Dear Michigan, when will you warm up for me?!
Evie was born two months before Callum
He wanted us to sing to him after he blew out the candles- unconventional, but it worked fine :)
Coming face to face with a DF monster...
Like I mentioned earlier... you can see what he would prefer. Notice he moved the bowl of strawberries away from everyone else and planted them right next to him.
"Oh my goodness, these are the legos I wanted at Target!"
Can you tell he likes Legos?
Danya being the half-Asian she is, grabbed the camera saying we needed a shot of me and the boys.
Joel too, but unfortunately he had the 6pm flu... anyone else had that lately??

Talking to Katie while singing (and dancing), pirate-style, to a cd my mother bought him.
Even Callum dances to it. :)
And then, since it was late, I made him go to bed instead of playing with the legos (though I did oblige him when he asked if he could open up the boxes and just look at the sealed bags)
Well, I guess it's my own fault he woke up early and headed straight downstairs to start building. Needless to say, with Joel still a bit under the weather, he was able to snag a helper for part of the first set, before he proceeded to build all the rest by himself. He was literally playing with legos all day long and didn't even want to stop to eat... or change. Hence the pjs :)
He even got a orthopedic lesson in shoulder surgery after he built the robot
(given by the shoulder fellow... ;) )
